The eastern cicada killer is a large, solitary digger wasp found throughout the eastern U.S. The females use their stinger to paralyze cicadas which they drag into their burrow chamber and place eggs on the bodies. Once the eggs hatch, the larva feed and consume the paralyzed cicada. Yeah I know—it's gross. Males of the species show highly aggressive behavior toward other males when vying for a mate. Despite the males' fearsome display, they offer not danger to humans and cannot sting.
