What is S.T.E.M.

S.T.E.M.(science, technology, engineering and math) curriculum prepares students to work in groups and/or independently to apply the skills they acquire to develop real world solutions. By adding the elements of technology & engineering to traditional science and math lessons, S.T.E.M. promotes student innovation, critical thinking skills, discovery and hands-on, problem-based learning— skills which our students of today require to become global leaders for tomorrow.

What They Are Saying About S.T.E.M. Education
STEM mission statement:
Our mission
is to promote student achievement and preparation for global competitiveness by fostering educational excellence and ensuring equal access.
- U.S. Department of Education
“We must never forget what the STEM subjects have in common with sister disciplines like literature and history. Yes, they help us get good jobs, but they also help us grasp what it means to be human and live a good life. That is why STEM is truly among the liberal arts.”
- Linda Rosen, Change the Equation

“One of the things that I really strongly believe in is that we need to have more girls interested in math, science, and engineering. We’ve got half the population that is way underrepresented in those fields and that means that we’ve got a whole bunch of talent…not being encouraged the way they need to.”
-- President Barack Obama, February 2013
STEM education needs to be a priority long before a child reaches high school. Although some students who are introduced to STEM in high school stick with it in college and beyond, for many others high school is simply too late to develop long-term interest in STEM subjects. We have to start even earlier and make sure that the science curriculum in our schools foster interest in STEM. (Fixing the US STEM problem, Bill Nye)

                                    Green Ribbon Schools
Green Ribbon Schools is a recognition award program established in 2011 to honor public and private K-12 and post secondary schools  which demonstrate a commitment to the Three Pillars.
In Brief:
1. reduce environmental impact and cost in the schools
2. improve health and wellness of students and staff
3. provide robust sustainability and environmental education which engages STEM, civic skills and green career pathways.

Green Strides
In 2013 The Department of Education added Green Strides, a free, publicly-available portal for resources, webinars, and case studies to assist schools in making progress across every Pillar of the award.

National Strategy to Promote the Health of Honey Bees and Other Pollinators
In 2015, President Obama established the National Strategy to Promote the Health of Honeybees and Other Pollinators, an inter-agency program to address the dramatic loss of honeybees, monarch butterflies and pollinator habitat acreage.
To engage and educate the public in helping to solve this crisis, resources to advance schools' work toward the President's initiative have been added to the Green Strides portal. Nearly all Green Ribbon Schools have established native plant gardens, food gardens, pollinator gardens, certified wildlife habitats, and/or Monarch way stations.
